The Transformative Power of Singing
Music exerts a powerful influence on us all. Singing, in particular, offers numerous benefits: it can boost memory, build resilience, lighten your mood, reduce anxiety and depression, improve energy levels, and even enhance your response to pain. Beyond physical and mental health, singing strengthens confidence and social well-being.
A Century of Song: What Keeps Us Singing?
Is this why the York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir has been singing together for nearly 100 years? What binds this group of men, motivating them to perform for generations?
This choir is more than a hobby—it’s a vocation, a privilege, and a key part of York’s rich creative landscape. However, to secure our legacy for the next century, we need to grow.
An Invitation to the Men of York
We're reaching out to men in York and surrounding areas.
If you love singing but have never tried singing in a choir, what would encourage you to join us for a rehearsal? No experience? No problem! You don’t need to read music or have any formal background. We’ll provide music sheets, pair you with an experienced member, and ease you in at your own pace.
Whether you perform with us after a few months or a year, you’ll experience the joy of being part of the unique sound of a male voice choir. Many of our members describe it as life-changing:
More Than a Choir: A Community
Yet, at our core, we’re simply a community of men who love to sing together. We’re supported by a professional music team and a dedicated committee. We’re also proud to have a loyal following, many of whom have become lifelong Friends of the choir.

How much does it cost?Joining our choir costs less per rehearsal than a pint of beer! Is it important to attend every rehearsal? We understand life is busy, especially for younger members with work and family commitments, so weekly attendance isn’t mandatory. That said, the more you attend, the more enjoyment you'll get as you grow familiar with the music. We also offer early rehearsals for sections and small-group coaching opportunities.
-
How much do I have to learn before I can perform on stage with the choir?Learn at your own pace—there’s no pressure to perform until you feel ready. Some members set a goal to perform at a concert within 6 months and focus on learning that repertoire, while others take their time and may wait a year. To help you practice, we provide online rehearsal tracks so you can learn at home at your convenience.
